Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
I put a fair amount on the Djoker as well. Used about 10 different betting sites to take advantage of their free bets. Will be a bit of a ball ache going to each site andn collecting so hopefully Federer saves me the bother.
Come on Fed, turn back the clock just one more time....

I seem to recall that WTA put an age restriction in place because of so many young players burning out.lardbucket wrote:It was definitely a young woman's game, for years.
I'm thinking Evert, Tracy Austin, Andrea Jaeger, Graf, Capriati, etc; all stars at or around 15 years of age, some faded fast and permanently after success too early and handled poorly.

Me too; I think Andrea Jaeger and Tracy Austin burning out was a big wake-up call.

They both got done by injuries. I would have thought more Cipriati.
As a bit of useless information I see Jaeger became a nun.

After an impressive start to her career, Jaeger bombed?

Poor Fed. Had set points in the first on Joker's serve before crumbling in the tie break.
About to go down 2 sets as well.
He just doesn't have the mongrel to beat the likes of Djoker any more.

He is going to have to change his game plan, he is getting owned in the baseline rallies.
Can't see him coming back from 2 sets down. Hopefully it's a quick death this year and he doesn't give us hope again.

Hasn't happened in a final since 1927 apparently*.

Pathetic effor in both tie breaks from Federer. Really looking his age.

Wouldn't mind 6-0 in the 3rd to be honest, just want to collect my winnings and be done with this. No hope at all for Federer.

You might say that Djokovic isn't allowing Federer to play as well as he did against Murray but I don't buy that. He isn't anywhere near the level he was playing on Friday. Djokovic is doing a serviceable job but he isn't playing out of his skin, Federer is just handing it to him.

Annoyingly, Fed had set points in both the first two sets (on Jokers serve thought).

No idea how he won that set from 6-2 down in the tie break. Don't think anyone would have given him a chance at that point.

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
Danger for Fed serving first in the third set. He often loses a little concentration after a big set and Joker will have nothing to lose.

Might have been better to just lose the second. He is too old to have any chance in 5 which it already looks like he will have to do to win it. More likely Novak in 4 though.

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
That set flew by. Hopefully the 4th is the same and I can collect, no point in Fed dragging this out for a 5th, he isn't going to suddenly click today.

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
Federer has just been hanging on since the middle of the first set, he needed to win it from the front if he was going to. That amazing tie-break comeback just seems to have delayed the inevitable.
I really think Djokovic will top 17. He's just so relentless, and no younger challengers in the picture. He's got a calendar year Grand Slam in him, should have done it this year really.

Wouldn't bet against it, amazing that there aren't any challengers coming through the ranks. With an aging Federer and Nadal he won't have to work particularly hard to break 17 if no one else comes through soonish.

Really can't see a male player winning a grand slam.

Re: The Wimbledon Thread - anyone for tennis?
It is incredible that nobody born in the 90s has reached a major final yet, when teenagers have frequently done so in history. Is it just a case of a generation suffocated by the brilliance of these three, losing their confidence by not progressing as hoped (Dimitrov, Raonic etc.) and the only players challenging them to any extent are the more experienced likes of Murray, Wawrinka, Cilic, Gasquet who have served their apprenticeship and come to terms with the task in front of them?vilkrang wrote:Wouldn't bet against it, amazing that there aren't any challengers coming through the ranks. A bit like golf - nobody younger than Tiger Woods won a major for many years. When his form fell away the next generation came through with flying colours.
