Impressive performance. I was worried when I saw the line-up (Jones, Rodwell & Barry as the 3 centre mids) that the passing would be poor - okay it wasn't electric but they actually created a lot of chances, with Downing especially dangerous from open play. Barry's goal was fortunate (deflection) but Rodwell hit the post when the goal was gaping, Zamora and Jones missed easy chances and England created plenty of other opportunities.
Sweden hardly ever looked like scoring, their two closest efforts both being overhit crosses.
Plus England fielded 2 bearded players. When's the last time this has happened?
Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
yep, good performance.
Zamora doesn't convince as much as Rodwell up front - and Bent is ... well .... Bent is just crap. Always wanting the ball to be inch perfect on a pass to his feet ... moans when it isn't ... and seldom chases back to retrieve it ... wtf he's doing in an England shirt belies belief.
Walker looked impressive as did Dowling but Carson needs to improve his kicking clearances ... 3 out of four straight into the stands!
Was good that Lampard was kept on the bench ... though missed Parker's busy midfield cameos.

Dowling? That camp Irish bloke from Big Brother was playing? We've picked worse I suppose...
Anyway, liked this one I heard last night - with the seedings known, a group of Spain, Italy, Ireland and Greece is a possibility. It would be known as the "Group of Debt"...

Every time I think that Sepp Blatter couldn't possibly be any more of a c*nt, he goes and proves me wrong.

They are worried in Greece because of the level of debt they may not be able to afford to send players to the tournament. They might have to go cap in hand to other EU nations for players. I doubt after the GB Olympics Team controversy Wales will be willing to support another Bale out.

Bloody hell, it's starting already. After a couple more friendly wins it will go from "measure of optimism" to "make no mistake, England are genuine contenders".

Contenders for what precisely? The Team most likely to disappear up its own arse?

Sepp Blatter. Can you believe this man? He has denied there is a racism problem in football, and said of players who are the victims of racism- "One who is affected should say 'this is a game' and shake hands with his abuser at full time."
Seriously?
Of course, Blatter will dismiss criticism of him as English whingeing.

Looks like Europe doesn't really give a fark about it so there's no chance of him stepping down. Such a shame that with the amount of influence that FIFA have over the world that their figurehead doesn't seem to give a crap about the issue.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
I don't know why anyone's surprised. He's been getting away with unacceptable actions for years and years. This is the man who went to meet Robert Mugabe to discuss and receive advice on corruption in football. This is not a joke. It didn't happen years ago. It happened this year. How he was allowed to keep his job after that, I do not know. That was far more of a disgrace than some bizarre comment on handshakes. The man literally has no shame.
Blatter will always be a f*cking joke and the only reason he's still in power is because his rivals are just as odious, venal and corrupt.

I didn't know that. Ridiculous. I would say thank god this is his last term but no doubt that'll change somehow.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
Was suggested he had an arrangement to support Platini next time, not sure he's a lot better in terms of being anti-technology and anti-English but anyone would be an improvement.
Seen some suggestions that it's only the English who are against Blatter because of the World Cup bid. Supporting racism is better than supporting the English, it seems, that's how popular we are in the world's biggest support. I've said it before, time for us to leave FIFA, tweak the laws of the game a bit and create English Rules Football.

Well most of mainland Europe is just as much of a disgrace as Blatter when it comes to racism. Lax, pathetic neanderthal attitudes at national association and fan level.
Vilks - yeah, it's like asking Josef Fritzl for parenting advice. I think part of the idea was that Blatter was supposed to help Mugabe clean up the corruption in Zimbabwean football which is equally laughable, given Blatter's track record. June this year. June FFS.

Don't know what you're all on about, Blatter has black friends
As for leaving FIFA, I know we're European but it doesn't mean we have to act like mincing f*ckwads.

Just seen a bit of Gazza on Life Stories. Cor, I can't understand how alcohol is legal and some other drugs aren't. Yet more proof (if any was needed) of how completely it f*cks people up.

If there was a list of the world's biggest qunts Blatter would be right up there alongside Simon Cowell and Gareth Batty.

I 'king wish!
This would have been in 2010 when Slurrey played us in Div 2. It's fair to say that Mr Batty is not the most popular person in these parts and he got a little bit of stick from the faithful. Some of it did go over the top and was best left unsaid, but the Battster acted like a complete girl.
Looking forward to locking horns with him next season - if he gets a game.

Is it just me or is Robbie Savage actually an alright bloke?
I've thought he was a qunt for years, but in pretty much every interview I see him in these days he seems pretty down to Earth and handles himself quite well.

So, Steve Bruce wins the sack race, though in a record slowest time... AVB and Keanout (isn't that his name?) will have to settle for silver and bronze.
Candidates to replace him? Mark Hughes would seem like an obvious one off the top of my head, would fit with the Man Utd connection on the playing side... and he'd probably still do better up front than what they've got now! Can't see it being a situation to tempt Martin O'Neill back. There's always McClaren... Come to think of it Billy Davies still isn't back in a job, they could do a lot worse.

Obviously as a sheepshagger (in the Derby sense rather than the Welsh one) and a wind-up merchant I never liked him but he does seem to come across better now, clearly totally genuine over the Speed tragedy and probably is a decent bloke when he's not playing up to the character that has been created for him over the years.vilkrang wrote:Is it just me or is Robbie Savage actually an alright bloke?
