So the team who had their fate in their own hands went crashing out and the team who needed some favours elsewhere won for nothing.
Good times indeed.

If anyone wanted further proof that the Premier League is a declining force in the game, they've been handed it on a plate tonight.

Chelsea and Arsenal will avoid Barcelona and Real.
Napoli or Milan would be tricky but if they avoid those two they should both make at least the quarters.

Chelsea were flattered by their scoreline - they had considerably less possession than Valencia, who were just about impotent up front.

Not particularly arsed about this story, but I did find it ridiculous that they pixelated his hand. It's not even pixelated very well, it's still clear what sign he is making.

I don't think it's declining (amongst the big clubs anyway) but it didn't take a genius to see that none of the top 4 clubs squads had that vintage look about it this season.

Have to say I'm very surprised, I thought at best it would stay at 3 games and was worried they'd extend it to 4. Really good result for us.

I'm immensely overjoyed. I focked work off so I could go and celebrate. There's oh... 15 of us so far, it'll probably turn into way over triple-digits.
In fact, we all probably won't go to work until he's won us the entire tournament.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
No, no, no. You're right. It's good news for us, because this means that if we get to the final he'd have most likely scored his customary 1.3 goals in 4 matches. A vital cog in the mean machine. Our chances of winning have now soared.
Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
You're clueless if you don't think he is vital to our (non-existent, admittedly) chances. He's easily our best player and what he lacks in raw goalscoring figures he makes up for in creativity.
I actually wouldn't mind seeing him as a central midfielder in the future, he did pretty well when Ferguson put him there earlier this season. When his pace starts to go I think he'll end up there anyway, you don't see many strikers still being a force into their 30s, but he could extend his career at the highest level for a few more years if he dropped back there.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
No, you're clueless if you think he has any effect on the national side in tournaments. Of course he's very good, of course he's our best player... but he constantly goes missing in the big matches. He GPG ratio against actual decent defenders is horrendously worse than his already bad overall strike rate.
It's all well and good cliche-ing it with the creativity thing... maybe he does make up for it, but let's face facts - he does nothing to affect the outcomes of our results, from a tournament play perspective.
The media have gone all schoolgirly and harped on and on about it. Like he's not some overrated twat who acted like a qunt, again.
Fair enough - let's all hope he gets there, scores abundantly and influences the team. If he does, that will be a break from the norm. Distinct failure will be 'same old, same old...'

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
He's only been involved in 3 major tournaments, one of them he had a stormer and in another he was unfit due to injury. So if we take the injury out of the equation then it's a 50/50 success rate at major tournaments.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
Shame his stormer was way back in 2004 when his manager just let him run out and do whatever the f*ck he wanted. I make it 3 goals in his last 16 appearances, probably with 3 assists as well.
The way I see it is that we'll have to make do with Young and Bent, not care that they look incredibly inept and laud their actual substance of end results.... Bent with as many E2012 qualifier goals as Rooney, Young with more assists than Rooney - both in less games.
Yeah, there probably won't be as much fluency between midfield and attack but it's the best chance we've got - a ram raid.
As I say, plenty of hype surrounding Rooney and this debacle as constantly reported by those ever-precious journalists (with obviously f*ck all to talk about) has soured my overall view of the thing.
My point being, it should never have been a banged on about topic as he should never have gotten sent off... but it seems however old he is, he'll always have the temperament of a 4 year old.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
Fancy a little bet? Lets say the winner gets to choose the other's signature for a month. I'll bet that Rooney finishes with a combination of 3 assists and/or goals.
I'll add a condition that he needs to at least play 2 matches.
Still, if he's as bad as you think then he isn't likely to do that well is he, so you up for it?

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
That's likely to be against Ukraine and one of Spain / Italy?
Yeah, I'll take the bet.
I'll add that I hope I'm wrong and he turns up, for a change.
And that you can only change the signature once.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
Just to be clear, I don't mean 3 goals or 3 assists, I mean a combination, so 2 assists and 1 goal would mean I'd win.

Yeah, I knew what you were on about. You're saying he's going to have to excel himself in comparison to his England career so far. And I hope he does.

Spurs Fans - not the sharpest tools in the shed then
Angry Tottenham fans mistakenly targeted an Olympic champion when they took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at the officiating in the EPL club's 2-1 loss at Stoke.
The fans were unhappy with the performance of referee Chris Foy, who controversially sent off Spurs defender Younes Kaboul and disallowed an Emmanuel Adebayor goal on Sunday.
But it was four-time Olympic champion track cyclist Sir Chris Hoy who was blamed in an embarrassing case of mistaken identity.
Hoy, 35, received several messages criticizing what fans thought was his refereeing.
One tweeted, "Robbed ! Chris hoy calls himself a premier league referee !"
Another tweeted, "Chris Hoy, not only are you a useless **** of a referee, you also support Stoke."
Hoy, who won three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, replied, "Just for the record: 1 - I don't need glasses, and 2 - I do not lead a double life as an English Premier League ref."
