Ah well. It was a very heavy scoring series and I remembered Turner and Rowe; thought there might have been others.
What about a year earlier, India v Windies? Sardesai, Gavaskar, and others ...

Re: The 2011 Trivia Thread (III)
OK, I think the question JGK may have been alluding to is how many times has one side had 3 different double centurions in a series. The answer is 3 times. Two have already been covered - the 1938 Ashes and the current Eng v Ind series. When was the other?
Same side having 3 different double centurions in a series:
Eng v Aus 1938
364 L Hutton The Oval
240 WR Hammond Lords

294 AN Cook Edgbaston
235 IR Bell The Oval
202 KP Pietersen Lords

Re: The 2011 Trivia Thread (III)
Aw, darn it. I looked at that series 3 times and couldn't for the life of me find the 3rd double scored in the series that Cricinfo said was scored. I now know why. It was a 6 Test series and the link page from Statsguru takes you to a series page that only shows T2 to T6 (not numbered) in a side box. Of course Zaheer Abbas scored 215 in T1 to go with 231 by Muddy and 280* by Javed in T4. Apologies. There is one other series that complies.

Yes, JGK. Filthy that I didn't persist and find Zaheer's double in the 82-83 series. Fancy assuming Cricinfo had an error.
Still, it's a pretty rare feat - only 4 times in history of the great game.

I actually looked up the answer last night in anticipation of the question! The WI one was very surprising I must say.
As was Aust not doing it in 1938 because DGB's top score was only 144.

Of course, the Poms were only 13 runs away from having a 4th player do it in 1938.

Yeah, i nearly made a note of that. Interesting triv question. Who were the 3 double century makers for the Windies v SAf in 04-05, and BCL was in the XI? I reckon you could win some bets with that one, with just about everyone assuming he was one of the double makers.JGK wrote:And the Windies were only a BCL boundary away from having a 4th as well.

Looking at that Windies series - BSL scored 176 out of 290 odd and 196 out of 340 odd in losing efforts and then only scored 4 in the test that otherwise had 8 centurions.
What a player when the going was tough.

Morris Leyland would have also preceded Seymour Nurse by 30 years in scoring a double in his last Test innings had he not been run out. He nevertheless became the first player to score a century in his first and last Test innings against Australia.
As the Oval match was a timeless Test (the last in England) there was no reason for Hammond to declare in which case not only would Joe Hardstaff have made a double (he had to wait until after WWII to get one against the Bannies) but there would have had to have been a nail hammered into The Oval scoreboard as England score added a fourth digit.
Incidentally two records from that match that are sacred to all Tyke supporters: the 2nd wicket partnership of 382 between Hutton and Leyland is the highest by two players from the same county and the England side in that match had the highest representation from one county with 5 in the form of Hutton, Leyland, Wood, Verity and Bowes, all from Tykeland of course.

India have just conceded 500+ runs in 3 consecutive Test innings v Eng. Another instance (SL v Eng in 2002) was also covered in a previous Q. Can you name the other 2 occasions that a team has allowed this to happen?
