Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
I like it. It's like La Confidential with a sprinkle of Lynch. I particularly like Farrell.

Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
Wasn't sure about Vaughan, was waiting for him to show me something to justify the flat, pretentious delivery of the awful dialogue he's been given but nah, nada, nothing. He's got 4 episodes not to be a massive flop. There's only so many times we can watch him strong arm 30% of old weekend jobs and paper rounds coz he's broke. Despite the script, a better actor could have made it less noticeably weird/bad. It's a shame because apart from him I think everyone else is just about pulling their weight, acting wise.
- Spoiler:
- Shootout was nuts. Ridiculous but nuts. Obvs Chessani set it up. Right? Although if you want to stop cops uncovering corruption and worse, organising a public massacre is possibly the best way to ensure every agency in the US and the media investigates the shit out of it.

Watching True Detective and waiting, the slow start is deliberate I think.

I really don't know what to make of it. Vaughan delivers his lines like someone trying to read out loud for the first time. The other actors are all right.
It's a bit shitty soap opera-y. Reformed gangster and his wife are trying to have a baby, repressed gay gets his beard knocked up, drunk cop is in a custody battle with his ex-wife over their son. Come on, man. What is this bunch of dicks?
- Spoiler:
- And the shoot-out was so over the top and weirdly detached, I just found it funny rather than engrossing. Everyone dies except the three main characters? Check. A building inexplicably explodes? Check. Unlimited ammo agogo? Check. A getaway vehicle is stopped in its tracks by a strategically placed bus, drifting around aimlessly looking for a shoot-out to gate crash? Check.
And bloody Andrea from Breaking Bad smoking shisha? Where's Brock at? Terrible mother (although well done on bouncing back from being shot in the back of the head).
Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
- Spoiler:
- I think Paul's character is obviously suffering from severe PTSD from some Mai-Lai style massacre in Iraq when he was working for the private security contractors (black-something). The only time I've seen him look comfortable is during the shootout. Some have even theorised that he might have killed the city broker, which is why the other cop (who got his head taken off) was tailing him and taking photos. More likely that dead, sun-tanned cop was gaining gay-related leverage for Chessani/someone else IMO but it's a possibility.
I'm not really into writing things off as soap opera. Fleshed out, rounded characters are always going to have personal lives and problems within them.
I don't get why they didn't fall back and call for more backup rather than chasing the pimps into a crowd of civilians all guns blazing. Yes, they didn't want to risk cop murderers escaping but they seem to have caused more civilian deaths by doing so. And didn't they hear the shots? Why didn't they all run at the first one? It was all a bit mental but I was still holding my breath through it as I thought one of the three would be killed.
I think Vaughan has only ever been praised for his fast-talking, cocky performance in Swingers so as that's all he knows, he's trying to do an approximation of that character (if that character was a villain). He doesn't seem to have much else in his locker, acting-wise.
It all needs to start coming together and making a bit more sense, sharpish. Ani's dad, I feel, is the key to getting to the bottom of this. I don't particularly think it's massively worse than the first season, it's just Matt and Woody are absolutely brilliant actors, who elevated series 1 (along with Fukunaga's ridiculous cinematography).

Ani's dad...
- Spoiler:
- ... is actor David Morse. He turns out to be the villain in everything. Surely it'd be too obvious for him to again be the big bad.

He's a good guy in The Green Mile. :p

Anyone watch Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell? I don't mean telly fogs like Dello, Lara and vilks, I mean normskis? Delightful bit of whimsy.
Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
Tried it but couldn't get into it. Got bored. Might try that Rectify thing. Or give Deadwood another go.

Course I've watched the Wire.
Top five TV dramas of all time? I've made it this far in life without ever having to make a definitive decision on anything. I'm not about to start now.
My current viewing list includes True Detective, Better Call Saul, The Walking Dead, Humans (not great but I'm sticking with it), Under the Dome (addictively awful), and The Americans (underrated and probably only has one more season until it's cancelled).
I feel we're in a bit of a lull for classic TV shows at the moment.
Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
You used to proudly claim you hadn't seen it. If you've seen season 1-4 of The Wire then it must be top whether you want to do a list or not. I struggle to watch anything without thinking how inferior it is to that. Heard The Shield is good but can't cope with how much of it there is to get through.
I watched BCS, it was great. Surprisingly great. Humans is alright, reminds me of Utopia in style. Nothing spesh so far though. Only ever watched first half of first season of WD. Again, nothing spesh.
The Fall's pretty good if you haven't seen it. Also, Line of Duty from a few years ago. Would recommend that.

Season 5 of the Wire only looks bad in comparison to other seasons of The Wire, it's still better than any other show.
- Spoiler:
- I was as pissed as anyone about Omar but really it was the perfect ending, if he had got to everyone on his list it would have been too ridiculous but if Marlo had killed him it would have been too much of a kick in the teeth. You had Bubbles getting a great and moving ending, it was actually all wrapped up pretty well. The premise for the season was a little ridiculous, but f*cking hell, you can't write off the season in the same way you write off post season 4 of Dexter. It's still incredible, just not up to the same standard of the previous 4 seasons

Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
Are we still doing spoiler tags for The Wire? Ha. I agree s5 was still great. But the weird McNulty serial killing thing just seemed mad. Still loved it, especially the cyclical denouement with the kids. Dukie damn near broke my heart.

Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
- Spoiler:
Getting somewhere now. The Frank and wife scenes are still desperately stagey and poorly written. Even the 'why won't you adopt' conversation, which should have revealed a lot, could have been done much better with better, more subtle, dialogue. He did seem much more human this week, which I liked.
The rest was pretty interesting and quite good. I'm loving Velcoro (Farrell). Plot's moving along nicely. The shoutout massacre seems to be the equivalent of the Rust and Marty car park fight moment from season 1.
I wonder who Frank got Velcoro to murder, thinking it was his wife's rapist. A random? Or someone significant to the current story.
It'll be a shame if this series is only remembered for Frank. The first season's villain wasn't great - just ended up being some fat rapist. It was Rust and Marty, the cinematography, split narrative and philosophising which made it stand out and memorable. They tried to shift the high-falutin speeches to Vaughan without realising he doesn't have the charisma to pull off it off. Especially when compared to McConaughey
There are some good performances, what looks like a good corruption story and some interesting shots. It's not TW, but what is.

Can I just say that episode 7 was bloody cracking. Really enjoying it and will miss nearly all the characters now.
Will have to re-watch that one to understand all of the crazily dense plot though.

In fact, I'd say as good as any episode of season 1. Brilliant.

No point talking about end of TD because no-one seems interested but has anyone seen Daredevil? Half way through. BRILLIANT.

I'm two episodes behind on TD. I've got them sitting there waiting for me but I just can't get enthusiastic enough to be arsed watching them at the moment.
I hear Daredevil's good, but I'm all Marvel superhero'd out.

Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
It's really nothing like Marvel. It's very very brutal (I'm talking brains smashed and splattered in car doors and arm bones snapped and poking through the skin on screen) and has a proper narrative. Really really surprisingly good. Choreography and production values are fantastic. Vincent D'onofrio (full metal jacket - shot in the mouth guy) is superb as the villain. Really gets good ep 3.
TD. Basically from the street shootout/massacre until the end of the penultimate episode is top banana (even Vaughan's alright). Then the last one is not as good but a decent end.

Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
Daredevil is f*cking great, pretty much all the way through. My only gripe is the state of the suit as the season finishes but apart from that it's mostly flawless, far far better than other stuff from Marvel.

Re: OT: Favourite Current Television Programme?
Yeah couldn't believe how dark and violent it was. Not just for a Marvel production, for anything! And it actually tells a good story well.
Tbh I only liked 2 Marvel films. Captain America Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy. The rest are generally dross.
The first Avengers was alright as well. Mainly because of the humour.
