Fred Nerk wrote:Still prefer Mishmash for Mitchell Marsh, even more so since it now describes so well his career and his role in the team.
So he now has 4 names - Puddle, Mere, Mishmash and Steak Knives.
I suspect he has more to come. The bnlg made him captain of the Wobblies and at the first sign of a score will again press the guys case.
Yesterday SEN had a phone call on who was the greatest enemy of Australian cricket. I was thinking of Fatarjuna, but blow me down the popular selection for our greatest enemy was.....drum roll...

late night shopping channels flog crap products...free Steak Knives are often given as a bonus present.
S Marsh was the crap product, M Marsh the free steak knives.

eg I prefer 'coconut' for Shai, so that's straight in.
But pronounced "Shay", last time I heard.

Is this what Mr bucket is alluding to?
Can't say I'd heard it before. Hence my ?? on the previous page.
If so, I'm with Peter. It's "Shay" Hope.

I've checked some Ewetube clips and they (including WI captain Jason Holder at presser after Hope's twin tons at Headingley) all pronounce Shai as "Shay".
So "Coconut Shai" makes fark all sense.

FFS. Rather tedious derivations either way ...
FWIW, in interviews, I've so far heard 'shy'.
Coconut, heesso, or lock.
Guevara, 2. Elebaa. Papermeh.

I shy at the stumps, but his captain and others (as per Ewetube) call him "Shay".

Re: Glossary update 2015
There are multiple interviews on Ewetube with the 'Shai' pronunciation going either way. In all the early interviews that I heard (English commentators) the 'shy' pronunciation was prominent, hence my recent comment. If it's supposed to be pronounced the other way that will be confirmed soon enough. The point I was trying to make was entirely different ... I was actually commenting that a nickname repeatedly laboured by just one or two individuals yet generally ignored, grimly tolerated with rolling eyes, or openly ridiculed is not in my opinion 'in common forum usage' or worthy of inclusion in the glossary. 'Coconut' was suggested as a putative lame nickname which could conceivably be pushed by just one person, which certainly would not 'qualify' it for 'elevation' to the glossary (in case the TIC 'so that's straight in' was missed). Horrie's nicknames, most of which only he uses, might in some cases be a better example of this. We know who he means (sometimes) but that doesn't mean those nicknames (Steak knives, etc) are in 'common forum use'.
To be honest I'm not sure I've seen much of great glossary interest recently. That's partly why I lost a lot of interest and motivation halfway through my revision process. There has been a tapering of input from posters overall, and less input by most of our more original thinkers. I'm talking about you, Danny and Dello, you thunderqunts. We're slipping. There was some really good stuff in the past that never made it in ... eg ... 'Silent Les' for James Hopes, which at least showed some wit, or wordsmithing; if that doesn't get in because it's not taken up generally, then I think a lot of the recent suggestions don't get in either. They shouldn't get in just because they're being 'pushed' now, right at a time of glossary revision.
However ... the glossary is definitely not 'mine'; it was always and remains common property. If something gets used a lot, it gets in.

What I meant, but more eloquently posited.

Re: Glossary update 2015
Just because throwing oil on a fire is fun (apols anyone in western NSW). But someone from a Caribbean background could mean "shy" but it comes out as "shay".
I'm all for the glossary being updated as per your guidelines. I too despair at horrie but he ain't the only offender and I quite often give up on threads where various people name their XIs for this reason. As someone who wasn't here in the early days following the diaspora I still need to resort to the glossary occasionally and find it useful.

This debate has got bigger than I imagined.
I was throwing in a head-scratch.
But it's hardly a big burning issue in the world, more angels on a pinhead. The Forum is a bit of a speck in a cranny of the Universe.

Re: Glossary update 2015
Some say shay, some say shy. I don't really care. Just didn't understand "coconut" and said so. I didn't intend it to be any sort of issue.
