Re: Who are world cricket's current GREAT players?
definitely a subjective topic - the lines can be blurred.
dravid was the biggest contributer in all of indias major wins during the 2000s. between 2002 and 2006 (thats 5 yrs, the best way to judge a player imo is take his 5 yr peak) he was the prize wicket.
kallis and pollock are extremely underrated on this forum. their stats put them up there with sobers [ATG], imran [ATG] and miller [G]. pollock played on for too long. he could have retired in 2003 with 300 wkts @ a sub-21 average to go with his 35 batting avg.
for me only SRT, murali, ponting & kallis (as an all-rounder, not as a batsman) are ATG's.
dravid, sehwag, pietersen & possibly sangakkara are GREATS
the likes of ntini, jayawardene, chanderpaul, laxman, smith, mo yousuf, shoaib akhtar, brett lee are very good or maybe even great within the context of their country's cricketing history
thats 8 players and only 1 is a bowler. step up steyn, ishant, johnson et al!

Gayle is not an ATG ODI player
You don't have a clue Gayle has scored 16 of his 19 hundreds away from home and averages over 44 away from home.
He had an excellent tournament during the last Champion's trophy where he scored 3 centuries including one in the semifinals against South africa which knoked them out of the competition.
Gayle is an all time great ODI player. He has more 150 + scores than any other batsman bar Lara and Tendulkar and has played 100 less games than both.

I could be wrong but I think all of Lara's 150+ scores were against minnows.

Lara regularly made big scores against weak attacks on placid pitches.

Didn't Lara once make a 160 odd against OZ in the West Indies?
Also, 150 is of course an arbitrary number and the list is skewed towards openers who have more time to get there.

I was a lot more scared of all those guys than of Crystal.

169 Vs SL in '95
156 Vs Pak in '05
153 Vs Pak in '93

Well Gayle is seen as a swiper by many even though his record suggests otherwise. Gayle has probably played 100+ less games than all of these players bar Richard but his record compares favourably with all bar the peerless Tendulkar

Gayle wouldn't even make an AT West Indies JAMODI XI would he?

I'd take either of those two against Gayle.

I too thought Lara made a 150 vs Oz.
But it is his 139 in Port of Spain I am thinking of.

I'd take either of those two against Gayle.
Lara would open (whose record is ATG in that position)
Hooper might be a makeshift opener too, because he has to be in there somewhere.
Then maybe Viv, Lloyd, Chaderpaul

Hooper over Gayle?
What is the rationale behind that selection?

Ponts obviously doesn't like Gayle.
But I'm really not sure about him being an ATG.

Same here ... both of them ... every time ... and no matter who the opposition was or what condition the track was in.

Re: Who are world cricket's current GREAT players?
My ATG West Indies JAMODI XI would be something like:
GG
Haynes
Viv
Lara
Lloyd
Hooper (5th bowler)
Dujon
Holding
Roberts
Ambrose
Garner
12: Logie
Strike rates of the openers compared to today's guys are irrelevant. They were murderous when needed. And of course Viv and Garner are the greatest of all in their positions. Have left out Marshall for his relatively poor JAMODI record (of course the team would hardly be weaker with him in it).
Also, have left out Sobers despite his 1 JAMODI.

Malcolm Marshall for Roberts. Marshall was the best of all the Windies quicks in the 80s.

I'd go with Harper as 12th man. Who is a better fielder.
Also Sarwan might come in for GG, and push Lara up to opener. Haynes is a must.
