Re: Ashes Squad
A late starter?
" "The Federal Government's move to amend the nation's citizenship laws looks set to sail through Parliament, paving the way for leg spinner Fawad Ahmed to apply for an Australian passport.
Chief Australian selector John Inverarity has left open the possibility that Ahmed could be included in the Ashes squad, with speculation rife the Pakistan-born tweaker could replace Nathan Lyon, who was dropped and then recalled during Australia's 4-0 thrashing in India."

Have the Pinkos finally done something right?

That remains to be seen. He had some moderate success against some mediocre shield batsmen which drew some media speculation because a spinner taking wickets in Australia is such a rare sight these days but he has'nt really been tested yet.

We can all agree: he's gotta be better than X-Do.

Re: Ashes Squad
Could Fawad be getting close to an Ashes call up?
"Pakistani asylum-seeker Fawad Ahmed has moved one step closer to an Ashes call-up after Cricket Australia announced the leg-spinner would join the Australia A squad for the remainder of its tour of Britain and Ireland.
"Fawad is a spin bowler of interest and we look forward to seeing how he performs for Australia A," Australian national chairman of selectors John Inverarity said in a statement on the Cricket Australia website on Thursday morning."
----------------------------------------------------
Seems a good move. I don't give a fark if he an Eskimo - if he can land 'em and turn it from the leg, and is eligible, then get him in there.

Re: Ashes Squad
From the same article...
"The 31-year-old was given a permanent visa for Australia last November - he had previously sought asylum after leaving his home near the border region with Afghanistan.
A bill amending the Citizenship Act passed through Federal House of Representatives on Wednesday, which would allow him to become immediately eligible for national selection once the bill becomes law and he obtains Australian citizenship and a passport."
---------------------------------------------
Possibly the only thing the Pinkos got right in the last 6 years.

Re: Ashes Squad
it is a nice story....one of the things he got into trouble for in Stanland was his public support for girls being able to access schooling...
as someone as asked him yesterday...."Do you have a couple of mates in Pakistan who know how to bat?"
given the parlous state of our batting stocks - eg fuse, schoolgirl and the gcs - there is a strong case for decent overseas batsmen gaining entry under the skills migration program.

probable risk of NTR here but did anyone else read the comments attributed to David Gower about Australian culture - or more in his terms - its absence

I did. I was stunned to see such a comment from him. A bit classless IMO.

Not much of an article:
Too early to start Ashes sledging? Never.
David Gower has heated up the pre-Ashes talk by claiming Australia has no culture and that the cricketers have an "animal mentality."
When asked, in an interview with the Radio Times magazine, if England verses Australia was a clash of cultures he said: "I'm tempted to say, how can you have a clash of cultures when you're playing against a country with no culture? That would almost be sledging."
And he did not stop there, recalling memories of being an England cricketer in Australia. "If you're on the boundary you have to be very, very thick-skinned, because the Aussie crowd will try you with absolutely anything."
"The trouble is, if they've had 10 cans of lager, their ability to come up with something akin to Oscar Wilde diminishes. A lot of it therefore tends to be very stereotypical. But it's feral; if they sense weakness, they'll come at you."
Now all we need is the retort from Allan Border, Merv Hughes, Dean Jones to Shane Warne

tis a more Beefy than Gower thing to do but it was just a bit of tomfoolery.

Nah - it was a RobS/RobI comment - lazy.
Especially for someone who is the premier TV anchor for cricket in the country.

Fair point, I couldn't imagine Richie doing it. The question would have been answered with a "I'll let you come to your own conclusion on that" and an arched eyebrow

He's had so many blue rinses that the chemicals have started seeping into his brain.
Re: Ashes Squad
If only the yobbo Australian fans had had the culture to yell 'where's your caravan' at a player all tour. Highly amusing.
