I did earn a little bit of it myself, plus the cattle properties were Dads.. And it's purely a brain exercise for me. Any money I win gambling goes to charity or any candidate for federal politics who I'm convinced will look after the constituents and interests of rural Australia. Irregardless of their political leanings.

vote for me then qm3...my policy platform for rural Australia is to shut down those parts that are not viable and make the rest pay full cost for infrastructure and services...a century of subsidies have gone to propping up the life styles of the rurals...and personally I prefer californian oranges

I think we've had this argument before. Six of one and half a dozen of the other. It is a word just not commonly accepted in general usage. I like it as it has more Oooomppff( which is probably not a word) than regardless.

Might just forgo the charities for a while and use the winnings to invest in kero companies. Either that or send the money south of the border to prop up your ailing economies. ooops. Forgot we already do that through our resource sector.

Re The Melbourne Cup ...
With a max field of 24, does it mean that as the entries presently stand, Cumani's Basaltico will get a run (being as he is 24) ... because Luca was saying yesterday that the horse was doubtful to make the cut.
Roman Emperor does look good value @ 12's - as opposed to Viewed @ 7's, but I'm still going to throw good money after bad and stick a small wodge on Fiumicino at 60's ! Sucker ....

Re: Horse Racing Thread
The entries don't really stand as the final ballot is done on saturday evening of Derby Day. Though I'm a bit confused as every order of entry I've so far seen shows Basaltico at 33 but the date of that second declaration as Monday 22nd October. The 22nd was yesterday and it was Thursday.
And no, a horse can be balloted out even if there in the top 24 as there are still three or four(?) races to come which exempt a horse from a ballot if it wins.

Re: Horse Racing Thread
So the MC is, after all, a lottery pick and not done on handicap weights??
Unlike our Grand National (40 runners) ... where top weight 12 st down to bottom weight 10st ... and all those horses numbered 41 and over (out of 120 entries) miss the cut when the final draw takes place 24 hours before the race.
It seems bizarre that a handicap race like the MC is ultimately a lottery of horses .... regardless of their alloted handicap marks (weights)!

Re: Horse Racing Thread
I'm not exactly sure how it works. But the top weight has to be 57kg minimum. Then it goes on prizemoney (or form) over the last two years. The order of entry doesn't entirely reflect the weights and it's a quality handicap which means weights are taken into consideration but aren't the be all and end all. And the ballot isn't a lottery, it's for horses who haven't qualified under the conditions of the race and gives the committee a chance to elevate non-qualified horses (I'm pulling a lot this out of my arse) above other non-qualified horses if there are less than 24 qualified horses.
There are a number of international races that exempt horses from the ballot as well as the afore mentioned three or four spring carnival races.
At the moment the only exempt horse is Viewed.

Re: Horse Racing Thread
Aye ... makes sense that.
Cumani has said that he's got Basaltico in some Stakes race this weekend, which, if it wins, automatically lobs the horse into the MC as a confirmed runner (bar accidents/vets).... an entry which otherwise, Basaltico would have been balloted out of!

Re: Horse Racing Thread
Melbourne is a pretty amazing city from the sporting perspective.
January - Opening of the Tennis Grand slam season
March - Opening of the Formula 1 Grand Prix season
September - month of football finals culminating in 100,000 at Grand Final
October - Horse racing carnival - largest in a single city in the world?
December - The largest regular annual cricket event in the world
At various times the Melbourne has had international claim to the largest ever crowds to watch AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Cricket, Tennis and Baseball.

Have you been to Melbourne? Apart from watching underworld killings the reason Melburnians go to sporting events is there is SFA to do otherwise.

I always thought the point of owning a racehorse was to keep trainers of the dole.
