Boucher confirms here that he is hoping to be selected for the pommy tour where he will mentor the reserve keeper.
Doubt they will bold enough to plump for the rising talent of de Kock though, that Thami guy seems to be the preferred option despite him being only a few years younger than Boucher himself.

Erstwhile saffie Kruger van Wyk may replace the injured Watling another former saffie in the team due to injury.

Watling can't exactly be put in the same basket as van Wyk. He moved to NZ when he was a kid.

But if you're born there you're a former saffie.
Interesting that this test is in the far south in Dunedin. I went there in the middle of their summer and it was freezing and rainy. Think the slip fielders might need mittens.

BY that logic so are Strauss and Prior.

Of course they are though you would draw a distinction between them and the likes of KP and Trott in a cricket context. The last two either represented their former country at Under 19 level or played domestic cricket there, whereas the previous two were born there but emigrated before they played serious cricket. Prior spent the first twelve years there from memory so has to be a former saffie. I know people who came out here from the UK when they were in their early teens and they certainly respect their pommy blood.

So if you were born in a country and spent some or most of your formative years there you were not formerly from there?

Define 'some or most'. Thinking of Strauss as a Saffie is frankly ridiculous and serves only to add to an already facetious demeanour.

If you formerly spent your formative years there, formally speaking ... I'm confused.

So why don't you respect your Zimbo blood?
Seriously Red you are speaking a crock here.

Re: New Zealand v South Africa, 1st Test, Dunedin, 7-11 March, 2012
In Red's world Dexter is Italian, Pietersen/Prior/Strauss/Trott are all Saffies, Freddie Brown was Peruvian, Henriques is Portuguese, Tony Dell was a Pom, the Hollioakes and Gallian were Aussies, Symonds is a Pom, Grimmett and Brendon Julian were Kiwis, Ronchi was and is and always will be a Kiwi, etc, etc.
Utter absurdity.
'I know people who came out here from the UK when they were in their teens and they certainly respect their pommy blood' ... so what? What of all those folk who can't wait to adopt the citizenship of their new country, and shed their old allegiances? - there are plenty of them too.
The only (minor) issue I have with cricketers 'moving' is with those who clearly move only for reasons of 'a flag of convenience', after seeing an opportunity to advance their own cause, with no real or lasting loyalty to their new country. So ... I have no problem with Symonds, who moved at age 2; or the Hollioakes ... but Pietersen, and more especially Wessels? Nash? Ronchi? Darren Pattinson, Martin McCague?
Utter absurdity.

Personally I was pissed off when Wessels came to SA after losing his CA contract. It was like he left his spiritual home.

... and Jameson.
It's almost as though people should just stay where they were born, regardless of circumstance; or forever endure the taunt of being some sort of blow-in, whether they moved at 2, 12, 22, or even 32.
Oh ... and Asif Iqbal, of course, was Indian - along with virtually all the first Pakistani Test representatives.

A bit strange that the Saffies don't have a single first class warm up match before the tests. Yes, the likes of Rudolph, Peterson, Philander, and Boucher might be undercooked!

Re: New Zealand v South Africa, 1st Test, Dunedin, 7-11 March, 2012
I think the goalposts have moved here.
I simply said that van Wyk a former Saffie was vying for a place with Watling another former saffie. Technically speaking they're both from SA so they're both former saffies.
Then we get into this big argument over semantics.
I actually said that in cricket terms, there's an argument to consider guys like KP and Trott as bona fide saffies because they even represented the country in under 19 teams or played in the domestic comp. there. You can add Kieswetter to that definition as he played for their under 19 team.
Most would accept that Strauss and Prior had emigrated long before they would have played represenative cricket so they're different. However, Prior was born in SA and lived there until he was twelve. If you had asked him at that time what nationality he was, he surely would have answered South African, so when he moves to England, that has to make him a former South African.
It's a pointless argument really.
As for my Zimbo blood, I was born in Melbourne and raised as a Melburnian so we'll put that erroneous accusation to bed once and for all.
Agree with Henry though about the lack of a first class warm-up match, even coach Kirsten is concerned. He said that it's ironic that eight of the players who had acclimatised to NZ conditions and sleep patterns have now left the country!
