My sister is a 'trick cyclist' whose private practice is in the northern 'burbs. All her patients are women. Most have a history of sexual abuse when they were kids. She has been doing this work for over 30 years.

This is one reason why I get antsy every now and then about the grosser forms of objectification here by the likes of Nigel

I don't doubt any of that for a minute, h. It was more the part of your post that I quoted. Were you referring to families in general or just those of the victims? It wasn't necessarily clear to me in the form it was posted.

I think the nuclear family is a relatively recent invention that lacks the social capital and checks and balances that other forms of family have...eg grandmother and the single aunt living within the same household as well as extended community keeping watch over littlies.

Maybe these godawful things still happened in previous days at a similar scale to now...who knows as there was no avenue for complaint.

its always happened and often with other family members complicit in the silencing of victims. we just hear more about it now. attitudes to reporting have changed
