Re: Aus squad for SAf
So it looks like they're considering Watto at #6 in which case the battle is between Marsh and Doolan for #3. Given Invers glowing endorsement of the former, he might get first dibs providing he makes runs in the warm-up match. Alternatively they're considering playing Fork at #7 and elevating Haddin to #6 so that they have and extra bowler. That though seems to smack of bits and pieces again.

Valuable for the team does not necessarily equate good to watch.
The team's interest is to win, or not lose.
The fan's interest is entertainment.
Two different things.
There in lies one of the biggest dilemmas of test cricket.

I realise that. I will still maintain that Australian cricket would have still had a renaissance without Geoff Marsh which seems to be the sticking point here. In fact someone like Shipperd who was contemporaneous to him but had a better first class average might have played his role too. Even Bob Simpson acknowledged that Marsh had technical deficiencies and very limited natural talent. He didn't even average forty in first class cricket. He had very few shots. He was luckily anointed and persisted with despite his mediocre record. I won't resile from that and I don't care if I hear for the hundredth time that I know NOTHING about cricket.
And you have to hand it to Geoff Marsh, is influence, legacy and aura is so strong that even his undeserving son gets on the plane to SA.

I do not think to know a lot about cricket is a badge of honour.
I honestly wish I knew more about some other things, and less about cricket.

I didn't say it, Bob Simpson did and he coached him. So you know more than Bob?

Geoff Marsh was as old-school as they come, an Australian cricketer straight off the pages of one of the history texts in the Melbourne Cricket Club library: a farmer from some obscure speck of our vast island continent, he was, as Australia's coach during his playing days, Bob Simpson, later wrote admiringly, a player of "very limited" natural talent, with substantive technical deficiencies (a "strangled" grip and an overly strong bottom hand)
Bob Simpson

If he wasnt banned from playing for going on a rebel tour Shippy may have done a similar job ...

Far too bland and stodgy for my tastes.

And what would that be, that Geoff Marsh was indispensable to the renaissance of Aussie cricket?

Crikey. I can't remember the last Chiko Roll ad I saw.
Is it un-Australian of me to claim that Chicko Rolls are heinous things? My middle bro used to love 'em. I'm afraid I could never acquire the taste.

I've been on leave for the last week up the coast. Went into a fish and chip shop in Caves Beach and they still had original 70s chiko roll posters on the wall.
I was half expecting to see a Tab Cola poster as well.
