In what hopefully is not a sign of what's to come re Royce Hart, the OM interview I mentioned a couple of posts ago was meant to have been replayed on 504 in the last hour, but was replaced on the sched at the last minute.

Fred Nerk wrote:Incidentally my nomination of RDB as the oldest living Premiership captain following the death of the Weed is incorrect. Melbourne's John Beckwith, who was born in 1932, captained Ron and company in the 1957 team and was the next coach after Norm Smith, was and remains the holder of that honor. Weed and Ron were both born in the last week of Feb 1936.

Hart by the way was a phenomenal player and way ahead of Carey as a CHF in my view. Royce every week was guaranteed to take a "Leo Barry you Star" flying in from the side of a big pack to take marks.

Johnny Beckwith was a consummate defender and was the master of kicking long for touch, either on the bounce or the full (before these became frees).

A local legend, he is from a particularly great era of Tasmanian born and bred footballers - Baldock, Hart, Hudson, and Ian Stewart, hailing from Devonport, Hobart, New Norfolk, and Queenstown respectively. Tasmania has since then produced some marvellous footballers, but nothing to match this concentration of excellence through the 60s and early 70s. I hope he recovers well.

2021 Predictions Part one

subject to Covid disruptions and injuries

Adelaide

Bottom 4 ...imploded badly since 2017

Brisbane

Possible Premiers ...should finish top 4 ...If Joe stays fit anything is possible

Carlton

along with Melbourne and Freo they are competing for the title of biggest wasters of talent in the AFL

should be pushing for the 8....but could also be shit

Collingwood

Had a WTF trade period ...a racism cluster ****** that saw Eddie leave early

They thrive on being hated so it could galvanise them into the 8 ....or they could fall apart

Essendon

Should be pushing for top 4 ....but may struggle to make the 8

Freo

talent wasters ....injury finders ...cursed

Geelong

Now or never ...could go one better ...hope Higgins and Smith arent past it ...Selwood was a shadow of himself in the GF

Richmond easily account for Carlton in the season opener. They were helped considerably by the umpires in the first half, with two gifted goals from 50 metre penalties, and ran away with it after that.

There were some mystery calls from the umps that affected both teams. Better season opener from the Tigers and Pratts than usual. The Blues gave a yelp. That chap Dusty Martin can play. The Tigers have won their last 11 matches against the Blues.

Both fifty metre penalties were the fault of the Carlton players ...the umps interpreted them correctly

There are always mystery calls but I thought the Umping was ok. Lots of squealing here from Blues fans about Jones being penalised for deliberately padding the ball through for a behind.

The Melbourne centric admin of the Comp is underscored tonight when Footscray play the Pies.

I can see the "wobbling on the mark" rule and the injury sub rule causing some major stinks this season and definitely costing teams wins.

That Bloods win was one of the best I have seen. Three youngsters playing their first game and another three with less than 10 games experience. The Lions are a quality team and will contend for the flag. Have stiff face muscles from grinning.

Aye Horrie, the general field kicking and the entries into the forward 50 were something not seen from a Sydney side for a few seasons.

All the best to Robbie Tarrant, veteran North defender and brother of Chris, who went in for groin surgery and the medicos also a found an extremely suspicious 'mass' on his kidney. No final diagnosis yet but North are very concerned.

Dogs 100 Roos 26 at three quarter time.

Cue spray-on outrage from the peanut gallery about North being locked into this time-slot - if Essendon or Hawthorn or St Kilda want to move the RCH holus-bolus to the Airport or Kooyong Tennis Stadium or Luna Park respectively, do it and let's deal.

None of which lessens the fact that North are absolutely God-awful.

(Separated at birth: Bailey Smith and 80s midget-with-the-mullet Nick Kershaw. Wouldn't It Be Good if Norf could manage a goal or two to show they're at least still trying?)

Jesus, what a thrashing. Maybe North have finally hit the bottom they needed to hit before they can improve. Surely things can't get worse.

I have two replies for you.

'Lighten up, Francis'.

The 'maligned Bruce' couldn't play cricket, what makes anybody think he could play football?
