Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
I hope the IPL genius who dreamed up the TTO was happy with what happened yesterday
0/106 off 10 overs (Patel 30 off 25 , MtFTB 65 off 35)
2/106 off 10.2 overs (Raina 0 off 1 Dhoni 0 off 0)
0/106 off 10 overs (Patel 30 off 25 , MtFTB 65 off 35)
2/106 off 10.2 overs (Raina 0 off 1 Dhoni 0 off 0)

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
Why are people expecting ethics and spectator interest in a private tournament owned by rich boys out to make money out of it?
Stop whinging about it all ye and understand that this whole sham is all for money and not for sports or viewers. Stop wetting your pants over it and either ignore it or accept it. If you guys don't like it, don't watch it.
Where there is money and private players there will be these issues. The Stanford League funded by some dirty money should have also been a red alert moment.
I don't like the T20s and don't watch it either ways.

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
To my best judgement, people will not watch 7 and half minute ad breaks, surf other channels and come back. The real idiots are the companies that are buying these ad slots thinking people will watch them. The companies paying for the ad slots will lose money on this and will realize it was a useless spend after the tourney is over and hopefully will be in no mood to repeat the mistake again next year and in probability this may well end up a one time exercise in futility!

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
By the way mb, as ten have decided not to launch their HD channel in the bush until June, I won't get to see any of the IPL at all this year.
Just as I was willing to give it a bit of a try...
I'll watch Channel Nein instead, and see if I can tell the difference, given the number of commercials they cram into shows.

How does it feel being treated like a wozzie?
Is Channel 12 (that's One HD in SD) the same?

Even Mark Richardson, who's now involved in the broadcasts, is saying it's not such a good idea... Coming from Sky TV, which is pay-for-view, we don't like to run ads when we don't need to, because obviously we are trying to get people the best cricket available.
So stand by for Richardson to be sacked. Or have his surprise resignation accepted by IPL organisers.
Zat, clearly these 7.5 minutes after every ten overs is a pain in the arse and ill-conceived by the promoters (read that A/H Modi) as it'll turn into a pee-break or be used to get coffee, dinner, etc. and I'm sure the sponsors will realise Modi's erroneous concept is useless and refrain from commercially exploiting these blocks. It'll die a natural death. I really don't expect it to continue into the 3rd IPL. People don't watch commercials much anyway as they tend to be repetitive and unimaginative. But there are two sides to the coin that motivate the sponsors:
1. Primarily its money-spinning potential
2. Cricket for the masses – a sort of after-work excuse for a binge and a few laughs.
A worthwhile side effect is the earning potential for the players who have a very limited shelf life. I think people just have to accept cricket is turning into a very commercialised sport and it’s misleading to consider one aspect without the other.

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
Jim
Advertisers learn to adapt to what they can do depending on the event
AFL has a light that tells the umpires that the tv station has finished it's ad break after a goal has been scored and they can re-start play. The crowd will boo if the tv station takes too long
There are sponsors logos all over the ground or court in most sports
Players/Riders/Cars are covered in sponsors' logos
Everytime a 6 is hit in the IPL the commentator orgasms "That's a DLF Maximum" and they have the "Citi moment of success" or something or other too
There are ways to advertise things that DON'T interfere too much with the game itself ...This is a bad idea ...and someone should have had the sense/balls to tell that it was a bad idea

Be interesting if someone hits a seven.

"That's a DLF Maximum plus One"
I reckon they've taken the ropes in so far that you'd need two lots of overthrows to get a seven

Absolutely, embee, and I'm sure someone did tell Modi that the idea wouldn't go down too well. But I guess his balls weren't squeezed hard enough.
I'm sure alot of people, like me, mute the telly and do whatever it is they have to do. It's like a Mulligan in golf - only that too turns into an airshot.

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
from what i have seen so far at home and in bars most people switch channels to catch up on news or see a music video. still others take a break and grab something to drink or get a bite. out of the 7.5 minutes i am guesstimating that the majority catch around a minute of ads, mostly to make sure they dont miss the restart. would make sense to advertise at the end of the break. totally worthless at the start

Logically? Yes. But then again the advertisers in this part of the world are really thick and blind when it comes to cricket.....
So we can only hope!
