Ash ~
If there are enough of them left.
But, pace Lardy, I think there's no point being a Luddite. If there is an audience and a will, what can you do?
Even Canute only did it to prove a point to his advisors (IIRC).
I do hate the dollar signs in the eyes, though.

Precisely.and why does it bother people so much if they dont actually watch or follow T20s/IPL, as they seem to be forever proclaiming?

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
Maybe, given that this thing is seemingly on the cricket calendar to stay, a few more traditional cricket fans might decide to watch a few of the games, and would like to seesome, let's say, cricket, not incessant commercials. If I want to watch a shedload of ads, I'll stick the tele on Nein...SG wrote:Precisely.and why does it bother people so much if they dont actually watch or follow T20s/IPL, as they seem to be forever proclaiming?

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
TO in completely missing the point shocker . . . .
T20 and the IPL were sold to the cricket establishment as a means of promoting the game among a new audience . . . yet already they have shafted that would be audience for the sake of $$$$ in the shape of a 7+ minute break mid-nnings that disrupts the flow of the game and could ruin the batsmen's momentum (it is afterall about hitting the long ball, no?) and that will certainly annoy a good part of the audience . . .

if the audience are too bothered by it the ipl will lose out and will have to take away the break. if they are not it stays. too complicated for you tac?

TO
Did you read the explanation from the IPL official? The break is all about $$$ and increasing revenue . Game or audience benefit is not factor

embee wrote:"It is a move that is driven completely and totally by commercial objectives," a senior production official told Cricinfo. "It is designed purely to make even more money by selling airtime. Nobody could argue that this adds any cricketing value to the tournament or that it can be in the viewers' interest, either in the stadium or watching at home," the official said.
No spin in that pitch
Bump for TO

i know its not for the benefit of the audience. my first post:
"cant imagine it being too good for the players, esp when someone is in the zone
if its about selling only 2.5 minutes why dont they just restrict it to that and remove the pretence of it being a 'tactical' time-out which also supports 'charity'"
but my point is if the audience comes to accept it as a minor irritant (like ads between overs and after a wicket, which we have had in india since over a decade) then it will stay. if they lose a lot of eyeballs it will go. only time will tell

And if it goes, TO, what will the qunts in charge come up with next to replace the lost revenue? Players selling souvenirs during the change of innings? If you can't see the long-term implications of putting the extra $$$ ahead of the supporters and game, then I'm happy to leave you to your blind acceptance of whatever the BCCI decide to dish up as "cricket" in the future . . .

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
Why so much fuss over extended advertising slots in IPL?
If the idiots are going to give the audience a 7 and a half minute ad marathon, what makes them think the audience will sit glued and watch it without changing the channel for 7 minutes? People will also take a break, get their tea and snacks or watch news or something else.
It takes qunts of the lowest intelligence denomination who think the audience will watch all those stupid ads for 7 minutes with so much TV choice available to spend those 7 minutes in. Stoopid BCCI. Stoopid Modi. Stoopid franchisees. Stoopid boadcasters!
And if there is any 'cricket fan' willing to watch a private league tournament passionately and watch those ad breaks as well, then stoopid audience deserving what he/she/it gets.....

Re: Another great innovation from the IPL
meh, the ipl is clearly for entertainment and money. a 7.5 minute break might be beneficial considering its a 7 pm start. go to the bar and grab another drink, use the toilets. also the more money ipl makes the better it is for indian cricket as all of that goes to the bcci which leads to better grounds, facilities, practice areas, better pay for domestic players, etc. they can tattoo ads on every player's forehead for all i care. as long as all this stays restricted to the ipl i dont mind

Just a matter of time before the 10 over breaks get replaced with 30 minute adfest and turning the match into a full day's play like a JAMODI just to get in a mere 40 overs.

It's pretty simple. They need ways to recover some of the money lost from shifting it out to SA. More commercial TV breaks seems to be the option chosen by them. If it flops this season (and I really really hope it does), it will be discontinued from the next season when it will be held in India.

Even if it flops, the practice will become a permanent feature of matches, any matches played in India. You can't mix BCCI and ads revenue without increasing those numbers in the end. Any inch they get will be turned into a full blown business practice and a permanent nuisance value at that.

Or they could retain some integrity and just take a hit on the profits for this season?

Modi says that next year's IPL will be held immediately after India's tour to SA which would be February, perfect weather for everyone, just that school going kids won't get to see much of it.
