Re: Australia v South Africa, 1st Test, Brisbane, 9-13 November, 2012
I think that was in the hiding the Kiwis gave us in 85/86. We lost by an innings and 41. Hadlee got 15 wickets. This AB catch was off John Reid on 108 to break a 224 stand with Martin Crowe. Bad times.Mick Sawyer wrote:lardbucket wrote:
We beat someone in November 1987? How?
A couple of great catches by His Grouseness, AB I'm vaguely recalling.

My year 8 cricket coach drummed that catch in us as the perfect example of having to keep your concentration up at all times because you never know when a catch was going to come.

The mighty little man then batted brilliantly to score a ton along with Mo Mathews and almost make the Kiwis bat again. Can we clone him, please?

You may be right. I've just had a look at the '87 scorecard & AB took only 1 catch, though it was the # 3, AH Jones on 45, so likely a timely dismissal. Probable that I was morphing the two games.

Possible Saffie team-
Smith(c)
Petersen
Amla
Kallis
de Villiers
Duminy/Rudolph
Tsolekile+
Philander
Steyn
M.Morkel
Tahir/Kleinveldt
If they decide not to play Tahir then Duminy will bat at six ahead of Rudolph as much for his off spin than batting ability.
I think AB will keep and wouldn't be surprised if RP is the spin option. Kleinveldt will not play unless theere are bowling injury problems.

There are Rumours spreading here that Mickey Arthur has been enticed by certain South African players to send them texts detailing Michael Clarke's batting weaknesses. Apparently Arthur thinks Clarke is a doos.

AD reckons he's part of the best Test attack since the SAffer attack that he spearheaded.

I wouldn't play Cummins, at least needs a few Shield matches this season under his belt. He was rated higher than Pattinson and Starc before his injury last season though iirc?
Milf n Cot should be certainties with Harris, Bollinger, even Midge tossed around the selection table depending on injuries and how cold hell is. Then you have the other outliers like Bird, Hastings, NCN, Copeland, George?

I'd certainly go with Cot, Milf, OP and Koo, with Milf (at pace), Pup and maybe even TCS providing the spin relief.
Apparently Cummins has a strain, anyway.

Cummins has back soreness, which usually always translates as two months on the sidelines.
The supposedly wonderful and fault-less Cricket Australia post-Argus Review is suddenly looking a bit silly for letting Cummins play three months non-stop T20 cricket.

Sage.
I would be surprised if Cummins plays more than a dozen tests.

You could say that they're, a few Kookaburras short of a test ball?

Getting really geared up for this actually... should be a great contest, with plenty to show in the pace dept... SA might have a bit much in the batting, though. Unless Warner 'Hugheses' them.
Not long away. Not long away at all.
